Gisèle Pelicot worked for decades in logistics and administration before retiring to a quiet life with her family in southern France. Her life took a drastic turn when law enforcement uncovered that her former husband had spent over a decade drugging her into unconsciousness and inviting dozens of strangers to assault her in their home.
In 2024, Pelicot waived her right to anonymity under French law, insisting that the trial of her husband and fifty co-defendants be held in open court. By choosing to step into the public light, Pelicot rejected the stigma and shame traditionally attached to survivors of sexual violence, famously stating that "shame must change sides."
Pelicot's stand quickly resonated around the globe, turning a harrowing judicial proceeding into a historic moment for women's rights and legal reform regarding sexual consent, drug-facilitated sexual assault, and survivor advocacy.
Throughout her public ordeal, Pelicot has been an emblem of courage, dignity, and resilience. Her resolute presence in court made her an international figurehead for justice and inspired widespread public demonstrations, solidarity movements, and urgent calls for systemic legal reforms.
